How to make pixel art from an image
- 1
Add your image
Choose a file, drag it onto the page, or paste it. Photos, drawings, logos and screenshots all work.
- 2
Pick a size
Set the width in pixels. Small sizes like 32 or 64 look the most like classic pixel art.
- 3
Choose dithering
None keeps solid colors, Floyd–Steinberg smooths photos, and Ordered adds a retro pattern.
- 4
Download or draw it
Download the PNG, or open Everyone Draw and place it on the shared canvas pixel by pixel.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a pixel art converter do?
- It shrinks your picture to a small grid of pixels and replaces every pixel with the closest color from a fixed palette. This one compares colors the way your eyes see them (in the OKLab color space), so skin tones, skies and shadows land on sensible colors.
- Is it free?
- Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on how many images you convert.
- Does it upload my image?
- No. The conversion runs in your browser, so your image never leaves your device and is never sent to a server.
- What colors does Everyone Draw use?
- The website has 16 colors, the same palette as the PICO-8 fantasy console. The Everyone Draw app adds 16 more, for 32 in total. All of them are listed below with their hex codes.
- What are app-only colors?
- The free Everyone Draw app for iPhone and Android has 16 extra colors on top of the 16 you can use on the website. Turn on Include app-only colors to use them; they're marked “app” in the color list. Get the app
- Can I draw the result on Everyone Draw?
- Yes. Open the canvas, find an empty spot (Start new drawing in the menu takes you somewhere quiet), and place the pixels following your image. The color list under the result shows how many pixels of each color you need.
- Can I convert images for wplace?
- Yes, with the wplace image converter, which uses the wplace palette, including its premium colors.
The Everyone Draw palette
The converter matches your image to these colors. The website colors are the PICO-8 palette, and the app-only colors are PICO-8's extra colors.
